Brushwood fencing uses wires either side of the brushwood to compact the material. Pale fences use vertical posts embedded in the ground. The exposed end of the pale is tapered to shed water and prevent rot. Horizontal rails are then attached to the posts with two or three courses. Palisade fences are made from vertical pales placed side-by-side. Typically, two courses of waler are added to the interior side of the fence to reinforce the wall.

Fence panels should be spaced evenly. If you have a curve, space the posts every sixteen feet. If the curve is sharper, space the posts closer together. Fence posts should be properly secured to the ground, particularly if the fence spans more than 200 feet. The end posts should be anchored in concrete blocks at least two feet deep to ensure proper support. If there’s sand or wet ground near the fence, the concrete posts should be set at a deeper depth. A braced line can be used to reinforce weak areas in the fence. This is the preferred method for fences on curves.
